Painter in Maratea: Angelo Brando
Angelo Brando. a painter in Maratea

Angelo Brando is the most famous painter artist of Maratea, living across two centuries (Maratea 1878 - Naples 1955).
Active in Naples especially during the period between the two world wars, ANGELO BRANDO represents one of the most interesting figures in the panorama of figurative arts in Southern Italy during the twentieth century.
Biography of Angelo Brando
Last of eight children of the merchant Joseph Brando and Vincenza Zaccaro, Angelo was born in Marateat on January 10, 1878.
With the intention of fostering his strong artistic talents, he enrolled at the Institute of Fine Arts in Naples, where the guidance of Vincenzo Volpe and Michele Cammarano allowed him not only to complete his studies but also to enter the circle of Neapolitan painters who would form the core of an important painting school.
Such associations will allow our painter to exhibit as early as 1908 at the quadrennial show in Turin.
Having definitively settled in Naples, from 1917 to 1948, Angelo Brando exercised the profession of teacher of artistic subjects: he taught in various schools, including the Art High School, receiving other assignments during the same period, such as, in 1919, that of organizing the Regional Gallery of Naples, of which he was later appointed curator.
In addition to this, he was a counselor of the Salvator Rosa Promoter and then also commissioner of the Committee for the establishment of the Basilicata Picture Gallery.
He died in his adopted city of Naples on February 21, 1955, at the age of 77.
Impressionism and...

Angelo Brando's painting fits into the Impressionist tradition adapted to Neapolitan reality, descended from European heritage but characterized above all by sketch-like painting, of which Morelli was the greatest interpreter.
In other words, in Angelo Brando's paintings, one finds impressionistic influences, but also echoes of symbolism and secessionism.
In 2009 the Regional Directorate for Cultural and Landscape Heritage and the Superintendence for Historical, Artistic, and Ethonthropological Heritage of Basilicata acquired 34 paintings by the Lucanian painter with the aim of creating a picture gallery within Palazzo De Lieto, where one can now admire the works of the great Lucanian painter.
