So they told about Maratea - The quotes
In their words…
Famous quotes about Maratea

“Perhaps there is no landscape and panorama more sublime in Italy.
Imagine miles and miles of jagged cliffs, caves, sea stacks, sheer drops, and soft beaches overlooking the most spectacular sea, now open and vast, now closed in tiny coves.
Indro Montanelli
Along the jagged coast, recognize Maratea for the Christ who spreads his arms and the little harbor. Below, Maratea is a spit of sea and scrub, above it is a nest of lime, in both sites it has concentrated a terrifying beauty.
Raffaele Nigro
<<Until just a few years ago, it was known only by a few German lovers of solitude and camping enthusiasts, or by some Italians who had done their military service there... The first official news was given by the Daily Telegraph in June 1956: "We go to a place different from the usual" was the title of the article. And it spoke precisely of what the author considered "the big toe of Italy, a sweet name Maratea". A luxury hotel, the Santavenere, was born in Maratea. Tiled with different shades of pink, set on a lush green lawn thick with lemon trees, the guest is greeted like a fresh seashell. Tourists began to arrive in July 1956. Among the first, a young English lawyer, cousin of Graham Greene, with his wife, a Surrey baronet interested in botany, a group of quiet Swiss people in love with underwater fishing, and there I was translating the "Memoirs" of Christian Dior which would be published in installments in the Corriere d’Informazione. Those who arrive at the Santavenere in the evening hear as the only sound the sea's breath that enters the windows together with the hundred aromas of the Mediterranean scrub, of wild roses, pepper, honey, anise, and mint, and see no other lights but the stars. Opening the window in the morning, one will find a wonderful sight: beyond the flowered balcony, embraced irregularly by black rocks, green peninsulas, and tufts of lush pine trees, a sea stretched out and deserted in turquoise, green, and, on the horizon, dark blue zones. Not a boat on the water, not a person in sight, but a deep silence, a solemn and ancient calm, a beauty so firm and pathetic that it almost takes your breath away... I advise visiting the "Venus' wigs" in Lower Maratea (they are waterfalls of small blue flowers with a great decorative effect). Rustic jars and baskets in Praia a Mare. Finally, return to Maratea, while it remains this paradise>>.
Camilla Cederna
"Maratea is beautiful: Montanelli liked it very much...."
Beppe Severgnini
"It is a wonderful country... magnificent... there is no other place that I know that is as valid for me as this one that you see.
The colors above all are primordial colors.
Cesare Pavese
Michele Serra

"Even leaving behind Sapri and Campania, Lucania takes one's breath away with its dazzling beauty.
It runs along the Tyrrhenian Sea for only 30 kilometers, but it is enough to turn it into paradise.
Maratea is huddled on a bed of oleanders, pines, and eucalyptus, built sparingly and well.
Dear, yes, it is destined for medium-high tourism.
But decent and respectful even towards those one cannot stop for too long.
The beach of Macarro, south of the town, towards Marina di Maratea, is the most beautiful view so far coming down the Tyrrhenian, and probably one of the most beautiful in the Mediterranean
Pier Paolo Pasolini

The coast of Maratea has none of what is conventionally considered beautiful, not even in Boccaccio's footsteps: simply the coast is terrible.
Never seen such perfection: a huge escarpment, cut by woods, streams - Midnight, Malcanale -, gray with rock, dotted with tufts of uniform green, that plunges steeply into the sea.
The schema is Sorrentine, Amalfi-style, but it is filled with a concrete hell: obsessive: but the result is stunning.
Maratea begins however with being a much sweeter oasis: there are woods and the coast ends with greater sweetness on the sea.
