Immaculate Church ! Old town

Church of the Immaculate

The charming Church of the Immaculate Conception in Maratea’s historic centre, a short distance from the Church of the Annunciation and the town hall, was built in 1824 as an extension of an 18th-century chapel of the same name.
It has hosted displays of works by Maratea’s Nativity Scene Association and religious objects that belonged to Cardinal Casimiro Gennari.

Works of art in the Church

Above the main altar, in polychrome marble, there are two paintings, depicting St. Blaise and St. Peter, from the 18th century, as well as the statue of the Immaculate Conception, of the same period.
It is also traditional that the church preexisted and was dedicated to St. Peter.
This belief has been confirmed by the discovery, during the restoration work of the church in 1992, of a rectangular niche with a semi-circular apse adorned with a splendid fresco, dating back to the 14th-15th century, depicting the Apostles.
The restored fresco is subject to specific care against the dampness of the location.
