TIRRENIAN SOUVENIR MARATEA

Stories, chronicles, curiosities, and characters of the Maratea of the 1900s

These are moments of lived life, which in the dynamics of our memory, overcoming oblivion, are gems of historical identity projected towards a greater conscious civic engagement, individual and collective. Only thus, the charm of this Maratea, which I imagine in the likeness of a wonderful maiden, will be able to stretch, in an eternal continuous becoming, her hands towards a perpetually new brilliant future, where the magic of the environment becomes concreteness in the consciousness of men.

-Tradition? Nothing is sadder for a people than the forgetting of their own memory. Often one can hear the sound of this warning in the air... but increasingly inattentive is the ear of the distracted and now deaf people to the call of their land, that is, of the living society and culture... It is not impossible to combine traditions and innovations.
Riccardo Michelini

-His is a praise of men and women - farmers, artisans, traders, teachers, doctors, artists and poets - who have contributed significantly to the development of Maratea - economically, socially, culturally. At the end of such a rich reading, the echo and buzz of a chorus of voices remain for a long time, a strong wind of events, a warmth of encounters...

Gian Carlo Marchesini

- The research work, almost archaeological excavation, the denunciation, bringing marginal or illustrious figures and facts to the forefront, makes De Nicola a witness, an attentive and involved chronicler of his era. Some of his stories, popular and erudite, can be read around the fire - as in the old days - others lend themselves to socio-anthropological analysis, and still others are the subject of civil and political debate.
Salvatore Lovoi
