Old Town Maratea

THE MEDIEVAL VILLAGE

MARATEA center

Called the "Borgo" to distinguish it from Maratia di suso or Castello (Maratea Superiore), which later succeeded it as the focal point of the urban community.

The historic center of Maratea features typical medieval layout, with ancient houses adorned with loggias and doorways, clustered together and separated only by narrow alleys and archways.

The narrow streets winding through the architecture of the Historic Center, leading to small cobblestone squares of ancient stones, with surprises around every corner.

"the Borgo": Historic center of Maratea

Piazza Buraglia

If the Historic Center represents the heart of Maratea, Piazza Buraglia, the "piazzetta," is its center of gravity, a place to meet in the evening and stay out late.

From this square, a series of narrow streets unfold, which, in parallel, transverse, or radial patterns and regardless of any predetermined order, surround it.

During the summer, this maze of alleyways is an open-air exhibition of painted artworks and modern sculptures, a healthy walk not only for the body but also for the mind, perhaps to be enjoyed after dinner on a mild September evening.

But the Square is also the hub for a variety of shopping itineraries to be explored on foot, with small artisan boutiques, art galleries, cafes, and spots to sip an aperitif or sample local wine.

the 9 Towers of Maratea

historic center tower

Of the 379 towers built at the end of the 1500s by the Kingdom of Naples along the coast to defend against Saracen pirate attacks, 17 are within the territory of the municipality of Maratea.

In addition to the six coastal towers, three more towers were present in the Historic Center and are those that appear in the city of Maratea's coat of arms.

Of uncertain origin but also dating back to the '500s, only two of these towers remain almost entirely intact to this day.

infos

The Historic Center is a pedestrian zone during certain periods of the year and/or day, but there are many parking areas, free or paid, adjacent to the restricted area.

Very convenient is also the city bus service page for public transport of Maratea which connects the various locations frequently.
