Other Chapels in the boroughs

the Chapels in the boroughs

Other significant chapels also from an historical point of view are found scattered in the various villages of the territory of Maratea to complement those of the Historic Center (see).

Some chapels in the valley and in the mountain hamlets

In the valley of Maratea there is the chapel of St. Lucy, located in the Ondavo district, which houses a splendid fresco, recently wonderfully restored, from the 16th century, depicting the Madonna with Child accompanied by St. Blaise and St. Lucy.

A characteristic of the fresco is that it positions the patron saint of Maratea to the right of the Madonna, and not to the left, as is the case in all other instances.

On the tympanum of the little chapel is written the Latin distich
"Shining Light Shines for Lucia, Light, May Your Light Shine for Me, Lucia, Light"

("O Lucia, you shine with vivid light to those who live in the light; may my light, O Lucia, shine in your luminosity").

Between the fraction S. Catherine and Massa there is the Chapel of Fatima, erected with a characteristic cupola in 1945 by the town of Anna Iannini for a vow made on August 15, 1943, during the Allied bombing of Maratea.

Near the Rione Campo is situated, in an unfortunate location, the chapel of St. Barbara, from the 18th century, originally dedicated to St. Mary of Power, which houses a marble altar and a wooden statue of the saint.

Chapels of the marine fractions

In Fiumicello - Santavenere, there is the Chapel of Our Lady of Graces, the ancient patron chapel of the fraction, dating back to the 19th century; and the chapel of St. Joseph, near the beach, which is privately owned.

At Marina there is a second chapel of St. Joseph, also privately owned, an ancient chapel of an old olive press, now dilapidated, near the Marina Cave.

Along Marina, we find the chapel of St. Michael, whose restoration work can be observed along the state road, and the chapel of St. Bartholomew known as "St. Bartolo," in the homonymous district, dating from the 18th to 19th centuries; both are privately owned.

In Castrocucco there is the chapel of St. Gerardo, the patron saint of the fraction, built in the early years of the twentieth century, and the very colorful private chapel of the Immaculate Conception, built in 1926 by the baron and philanthropist Emanuele Labanchi.
