With the National Park of Pollino and even more with the National Park of Lucan Apennines Val d'Agri Lagonegro, Basilicata is the Italian region with the largest territory under protection which, considering also the nature reserves and other protected areas, exceed 30% of the entire region.

Including the Cilento and Vallo di Diano National Park, which geographically belongs to what is known as Greater Lucania, we can say that we are in the largest protected area perhaps in all of Western Europe, which surrounds the territory of Maratea in a semicircle, making it the starting point for fascinating and numerous natural excursions.
