Pier Niccolò Berardi (Fiesole 1904-Milan 1989) is known for having been part of the Tuscan Group that won the competition for the Santa Maria Novella station in 1933, but only recently has emerged from the shadow of Giovanni Michelucci, who was credited with the exclusive paternity of the project.
Graduated in 1929 under Marcello Piacentini, he was involved by Giuseppe Pagano in the exhibition on rural architecture at the VI Triennale with photographs of Tuscan farmhouse colonies. He thus developed a constant interest in traditional architecture and landscape integration, which would characterize his subsequent works: from the villas of the 1960s-1970s (La Gabbiola, Silva Honorati in Punta Ala, Nasi in Turin) to the Richard Ginori Museum in Sesto Fiorentino (1965).
His activity in the 1950s in Maratea, within the development projects for Southern Italy, is particularly significant. From 1953, he participated in the ambitious tourist-industrial plan of the Rivetti di Valcervo counts, designing the famous Santavenere hotel with its characteristic white arches, now iconic of the local landscape.
From the adaptation of the sixteenth-century tower as a Rivetti residence to various dwellings, his constant commitment to historical preexistence and landscape emerges, elements that would influence all of his subsequent architectural production.
