Rena d’a Carrubba ( beach of carob tree) beach

The beach of Rena d’a Carrubba or Garrubba (that is, "the beach of the carob tree") is more of a small pebbly shore north of Cersuta, in one of the most characteristic stretches of the coast of Maratea.
Until the middle of the last century, near the little beach there was the landing point for the boats that transported the vegetable ropes (called "libàni") processed and packaged locally and used for mussel and oyster cultivation.
Above this beach is the grotto of Cersuta (or grotto of Providence), from which a fresh water spring emerges.
The elders tell that this grotto was discovered by chance by a very young shepherd who, on a day in May 1843, to overcome boredom, was throwing stones towards the shore.
But one of the stones, instead of echoing off a stone, went through the entrance of the grotto – then completely covered by vegetation – and made a splash as if it had hit a pool of water.
Immediately all the inhabitants of Cersuta, who at the time had to go all the way to Acquafredda to get water, were thrilled to see the magnificent interior of the cave once it was cleared of the thick green undergrowth.
