Santo Vito Church

Timeless popular tradition holds that the church of Saint Vitus is the oldest in the Borough, the current Historic Center of Maratea, built at the top of the Capo Casale quarter, the oldest part of the town.

Only a medieval window in the apse survives from the original exterior appearance of the church, which, according to local historians, was built in the 10th-11th centuries, as the church was heavily restored both in 1883 and again in 1980.

Works of art in the Church

The interior of the church of Saint Vitus in Marateo's Historic Center still preserves some attentive treasures of painting:

on the main altar stands a headless figure of a Madonna with Child, dating back to the 14th century, accompanied by a 15th-century fresco of St. Roch.

The faces of St. Blaise and St. Vitus from the 16th century are also noted on either side of the presbytery
