The Widow Woman | Peppino De Filippo | Maratea Film

"The Widowed Lady"

by Silvio SIANO, 1964

genre: Comedy

The film, shot in and around Maratea, was one of many lightweight feature films starring Peppino De Filippo, enlivened by the presence of a very young Margaret Lee.

It can be considered one of the early attempts in the 1960s to promote a tourist destination through cinematic art.

Considered scandalous at the time more for its plot than for its legendary steamy scenes, the film "The Widow" was shot in the historic center of Maratea and partly in Praja a Mare.

For some outdoor shots, local youths were also hired as extras.

The Widow Woman - Plot

Susy, a Milan call girl, unexpectedly receives a castle from an old client, Baron Colletta di Sant'Omero. Arriving at the site in mourning, she is mistaken for the widow of the late lord and is immediately courted by the mayor, members of the town council, and other people all aiming to acquire the decaying property with little money, its future guaranteed by the industrial expansion of the Calabrian village.
Susy realizes the situation and shrewdly takes advantage of it, not hesitating to use her charms. She succeeds in obtaining the unanimous vote of the town council against the expropriation of her land, and, having tricked all the interested suitors, she dedicates her affections to Corrado, a technician at some important factories in the area.
