Annunciation Church (of the Annunziata) | HISTORICAL CENTER OF MARATEA

The Church of the Annunciation is located in the piazza of the Borgo, the historic center of Maratea, and is recognizable for its Moorish bell tower and its monumental facade, which completes the city’s street scene together with the marble column of St. Blaise, a simple monument erected by popular will on July 13, 1758.
The Church of the Annunciation in Maratea already existed as a chapel in the sixteenth century.
In 1585, he was at the center of a lively ecclesiastical dispute with the parish priest of S. Maria Maggiore, which was only resolved in 1589 with the elevation of the church to have the right of baptism.
The current architectural structure is the result of work completed in 1748, which ended with the Solemn Mass celebrated by the maratean bishop Onofrio Maria Gennari.
Works of art in the Church
The interior of the church, a small jewel of poor Lucanian baroque, preserves a beautiful canvas depicting St. Lucy, a work by an unknown author from 1755, and a painting of the martyrdom of St. Lawrence, dated to the 18th century.
On the altar dedicated to the patron saint is the wooden bust of Saint Blaise from the early nineteenth century, used for the celebration of the armistice of the siege of Maratea Castle in 1806.
The main work of art in the church is the splendid Annunciation panel, of Tuscan school, attributed to Simone da Firenze, dated to the 16th century, which adorns the presbytery and the marble high altar, located beneath a charming cupola decorated with frescoes of the evangelists.
