Churches and Chapels in Maratea

A visit ... to the 44 Churches of Maratea !

The city of Maratea is justly known for the many Churches and Chapels that dot its territory,

a tangible sign of centuries of strong religious traditions in the population

but also of great sensitivity in the conservation and restoration of architectural works and works of art.

The culture of restoration

The particular and widespread sentiment of appreciation for beauty has led to the flourishing of important professions in the field of architectural and artistic restoration, making Maratea a center of excellence in this sector.

An important impetus in this regard has been all the initiatives for the recovery of religious real estate heritage carried out within the various phases of post-earthquake reconstruction, starting from the eighties of the last century.

Thanks to this, today we have practically all the churches in Maratea rebuilt and, above all, visitable to fully enjoy their structures and internal works.

Visit the Churches

Of course, the area with the highest density of places of worship is the Historic Center, where Christian communities have been present in greater numbers over the centuries.

There are isolated emergencies in areas more or less accessible in the territory of Maratea, linked to the hermitage and the experience of the Basilian monks and the buildings constructed on the ruins of ancient pagan temples, such as the Basilica of the Shrine of Saint Blaise.

There are also a good number of Minor Churches and Chapels that characterize streets and alleyways, and although they are less important than the main churches, they are still very interesting to visit.

We therefore propose a presentation of each place of religious worship on the linked pages for a virtual tour of the various Marateo places of worship, to reinforce the memory of those who have already visited the churches or to provide guidance for those who are about to do so.

The churches are listed in order of importance and village.
