Cala Vecchia beach | Marina di Maratea
Cala Vecchia beach

The beach of Cala (della) Vecchia - beach (of the) old - is a picturesque strip of sand on the side of the promontory of Ilicci, in the village of Marina di Maratea.
Known erroneously as Santojanni Beach, it is called Cala Vecchia, or better yet, Old Cove, as the beach once belonged to an elderly lady of the area.
The little beach is enclosed in a small cove, closed on one side by an imposing rocky cliff that looms precipitously, while the top is crowned with a grove of holm oaks and pines.
According to archaeologists, the seabed off this beach contains the wreck of a Roman galley that sank after coming too close to the shore.
