the writer

Cesira Fiori was born in Rome on 25 November 1890. She worked as a schoolteacher and dedicated her life to education and community life. In the 1930s, as a result of administrative measures, she was removed from her teaching post and later sent into internal exile (confino).

From 1935 to 1939 she lived in Maratea, where she became part of the local community and spent the final phase of her stay in Basilicata.

After leaving Maratea, she was transferred to Abruzzo, where her period of confinement continued. Once this experience ended, she returned to Rome and resumed her professional career in education, also taking on organisational roles within the school system.

Cesira Fiori died in 1976.

La Confinata, published posthumously in 1979, brings together her personal memories of internal exile. Maratea is mentioned in the opening section of the book, which focuses on the year 1939, before the narrative expands to other places and periods of her life.
