PIER NICCOLÒ BERARDI. Architettura della tradizione a Maratea
PIER NICCOLÒ BERARDI
Architettura della tradizione a Maratea

Pier Niccolò Berardi (Fiesole 1904 – Milan 1989) was an architect best known for being part of the Gruppo Toscano, which won the competition for the Santa Maria Novella railway station in 1933. However, it is only in recent years that he has emerged from the shadow of Giovanni Michelucci, who was long regarded as the sole author of the project.
After graduating in 1929 under Marcello Piacentini, Berardi was invited by Giuseppe Pagano to contribute to the exhibition on rural architecture at the 6th Milan Triennale, providing photographs of Tuscan farmhouses. This marked the beginning of a lasting interest in traditional architecture and landscape integration, which would become a hallmark of his later works — from the villas of the 1960s and '70s (La Gabbiola, Silva Honorati in Punta Ala, Nasi in Turin) to the Richard Ginori Museum in Sesto Fiorentino (1965).
His work in Maratea during the 1950s, within the broader context of Southern Italy's post-war development projects, is particularly significant. From 1953, he was involved in the ambitious tourism and industrial plan promoted by the Counts Rivetti di Valcervo, designing the now-iconic Santavenere Hotel, with its distinctive white arcades that have become a landmark of the local landscape.
From the adaptation of the 16th-century tower as the Rivetti residence to the design of various homes, Berardi's consistent focus on historical context and the surrounding landscape is evident — values that would continue to shape his architectural production throughout his career.
